Program Overview
Safety Essentials is a psychology-based process designed to empower you to take control of your safety, by exploring insights into how your brain works including your thinking, your attitudes and your values. This course will help you understand that safety isn’t about protecting you FROM something, but about protecting you FOR something.
Providing you with the tools to take control of your thinking and feelings to improve the results you get in your life, especially regarding safety outcomes, Safety Essentials moves beyond behaviour-based safety, to the underlying psychological causes of behaviour – our thinking.
Through this highly engaging and practical program, you will:
- Explore a simple model for how our brain works so you can take greater control of it
- Develop practical ‘brain tools’ (thinking skills) that assist us to achieve greater results in life and for safety
- Explore ‘The BIG5’ thinking patterns (attitudes) that research tells us are proven to improve our personal safety results.
Program Outline
1. Understanding Safety Citizenship
Learn about the impact of an organisation’s Safety Culture on safety outcomes and workplace wellbeing. This includes how to identify different levels of Safety Culture Maturity, what it means to be a Safety Citizen, and how Safety Citizenship drives better outcomes for both organisations and employees.
2. Attitude – Behaviour – Results (ABR): A Model for Life
Explore the ABR model to understand how our attitudes impact our behaviour, and how our behaviour drives our results. This includes learning about how helpful and unhelpful ‘frames’ impact our attitudes and behaviours.
3. Seeing Safety as a Currency
Discover why safety isn’t just about protecting you FROM something, but FOR something. This includes identifying your own Personal Big 5™ (PB5™), to connect with what really matters in your life, and to understand how your safety is the currency that funds your PB5.
4. The Safety Culture Model
Learn about the intertwined components of an organisational safety culture, consisting of leadership, environment, practices and the person. This includes understanding how these components address both predictable and unpredictable risks, and why you, the person, can have the biggest impact on driving a positive safety culture.
5. The Brain at Work
Explore the science of the human brain to understand how your brain impacts your safety. This includes understanding the processes and limitations of the brain, how our attitudes impact our ability to see and manage risk, and tools you can use to break through brain limitations to better identify and mitigate risks.
6. Taking Control
Discover the Big 5 Safety Frames that impact how we think, feel and behave in relation to safety. This includes how our attitudes and behaviours are impacted by our Locos of Control, and steps to change our unhelpful frames through a process called Reframing, allowing us to achieve the outcomes we desire, at work and in life.
7. Playing Our Part
Build an understanding of how our social brain affects our experience of safety in the workplace, and at home. This includes learning about how our attitudes and behaviours can impact those around us, and how we can demonstrate safety citizenship by taking responsibility and ownership to influence positive outcomes.
8. Evolving Our Safety Culture
Find out how you can help progress your organisation through stages of the safety culture maturity model, to achieve a genuine Citizenship safety culture. This includes learning about the value of offering assistance, supporting problem solving, role modelling positive safety attitudes and behaviours, and being mindful and supporting of your teammates’ wellbeing.
